Jake set for F3 debut with Carlin

Jake Hughes is to make his Formula 3 European Championship debut at Hockenheim this weekend with top British team Carlin.

The 22-year old from Birmingham is adding the F3 outing in Carlin's Volkswagen-powered Dallara to his impressive rookie GP3 Series campaign with DAMS, during which he has taken a race win at Hockenheim.

He tested last winter with Carlin's F3 team, which is legendary in British motorsport circles for winning nine British Formula 3 titles over a 13-year period from 2001-13, and tested previously with the team as his prize for winning the 2013 BRDC Formula 4 Championship.

Numerous drivers on the current Formula 1 grid raced for Carlin in the formative stages of their careers, including world championship leader Nico Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo, Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz Jr, Daniil Kvyat, Kevin Magnussen, Jolyon Palmer, Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr. The team also ran Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen in tests that were critical to their careers.

'I'm really happy to be joining Carlin at Hockenheim this weekend, and very thankful to the team for this opportunity.'

"We've come close to doing something in the past before, so it's nice to have the chance now to race with the team in F3.

"I'd like to thank Francois Sicard at DAMS for agreeing to my participation with Carlin. GP3 obviously remains my focus for the remainder of the season, but it's always very useful to get extra mileage and experience, which will help me for the future. It will be tough to learn through a race event, but hopefully I will make some progress with every session."

Team boss Trevor Carlin added: “Jake is a driver we have wanted in a Carlin car for quite some time. Obviously we’ve watched his career with interest and had Jake test several cars with us in the past. He’s a fantastic asset to any team and I’m delighted he has been able to accept our invitation to race with us. We’re looking forward to his feedback this weekend. With no preparation, it will be a steep learning curve for him in a tough field, but I’m sure he can do a competitive job and help develop the car further.”
