Points finish for Hughes at FIA F2 season-opener

31-12-20

BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT
ROUND ONE | 18-20 MARCH

  • Bahrain hosted the season-opener of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 championship
  • Jake and Van Amersfoort Racing geared up for the team's debut in the series
  • A positive qualifying session on Friday saw Jake hold provisional pole before a flurry of fast laps at the end of the session meant he qualified P8 for the Feature Race
  • In the reverse-grid Sprint Race on Saturday, Jake started from P3
  • A dramatic opening lap saw Jake dice for position but ultimately drop down the order
  • He began his fight back through the field but was forced to retire after being spun out by another car
  • Jake started the Feature Race from P8 and was again locked in a tight battle from the start
  • A late-race safety car resulted in a one-lap shootout where Jake was able to seize P9 for his first points finish of the season

“I'm pleased to get some points on the board for the team. Our performance in Qualifying on Friday was really strong and it was great to line up inside the top ten on the team's debut. The Sprint didn't go quite as we planned it - we just couldn't get the front tyres to work and that ultimately set us back. It was a shame to then retire after being spun around. I enjoyed the Feature race on Sunday, there was plenty of action and a really exciting finish with the one-lap shootout. Happy with the result and that gives us a base to work with as we head to Jeddah next week.”
